Dependent living solutions.

With the cost of living increasing and our Aged Care system in crisis, many people are looking for alternate options to provide safe, secure and family focused residential care for their loved ones.

People who are ageing, have a disability or who are not competent to safely live independently, could find a cabin as a solution to their issues.

In many councils, the option to install a secondary dwelling on the property to provide a dependent living solution is a real option. Families can purchase a relocatable cabin that can be equipped with a bathroom, kitchen and bedroom (subject to planning approval) and have this installed on their property to provide safe accommodation for the dependent person.

The benefits for a dependent person secondary dwelling are that:

  • The dependent person can accommodate with their family.
  • The need for nursing home or facility based residential care is reduced.
  • It promotes multigenerational living that has an abundance of benefits for all generations within the family.
  • It reduces loneliness for all.
  • It reduces the cost of living for all as bills and housing expenses can be shared.
  • It offers the dependent person some independence, whilst still having family or friends close by.
  • The cabin tends to hold its value and can be resold when no longer required.

In order to find out if a secondary dependent living dwelling is an option for your home, the first thing you must do is contact your local council and discuss your situation with the planning department.

You will require planning permission and most probably a building permit as councils want to ensure the structure is built to building code and structurally safe.

Each council may have slightly different requirements, however they tend to be very helpful in providing information to assist in the planning process if this is something you and your family want to achieve.
